Believing that now is the time for those who work with intentional sound and/or music to come together, SAMA envisions local groups as a way in which learning, community-building, and SAMA awareness can happens regionally.
Any SAMA member can organize a group that is intended to provide opportunities for both the public and/or SAMA members to come together for shared experiences centering around the interdisciplinary nature of intentional sound and music, as well as SAMA’s mission. Local groups are an excellent way to provide connecting experiences for those seeking to join with others who share the passion for and belief in the transformative power of sound and music.
SAMA’s first and only local group at this time is SAMA NY, which began in May 2010. Several people who attended the 2010 SAMA Symposium were inspired to renew and expand upon the sense of community and energy they experienced at the Symposium.
These SAMA NY Founders, Sheila Allen, Nacho Arimany, Ruth Cunningham, Maren Good, Erika Gustafson Marletta, Dena Phoenix, Philip Joseph Restine, and Stacey Yeldell created the first Sound Out With SAMA on November 2010 at 11 Times Square, in NYC.
Co-ordinated by Erika Gustafson Marletta with the help of Sheila Allen, Nacho Arimany, Ruth Cunningham and Maren Good, SAMA NY brought together close to sixty people from metro and suburban NYC areas for an evening of listening, active sound-making, learning about SAMA, and mingling (look for the upcoming article about Sound Out With SAMA to be featured in future publication).
SAMA NY organizers are planning to offer more gatherings for those in the NYC area working who are interested in intentional sound and music. SAMA NY aspires to support and develop relationships among a diversity of professionals, promote learning, and spread the word about the power of sound and music to affect life. Come, and find out more!
